The Customer Care Unit encourages the general public to send or discuss with its members all the complaints and suggestions aimed for giving a better service. The Unit is also responsible for Media programmes dealing with Central Public Library throughout the various televison/radio stations and all maltese newspapers. Membership of all serving public libraries is passed through the unit where an average of over 6,000 new members are being enrolled every year.
Activities held by the Customer Care Unit during the year:
A 1 hour educational programme aimed for children aged 4-7 years which is organised every Friday during the months of November-May with a special final one in June presided by the Hon. Minister of Education. During the programme children are trained to build up self confidence and introduce reading in a very natural way. Children are encouraged to attend with their parents or guardians.
A 1 hour educational programme aimed for children aged 8-10 years which is organised every Wednesday during the months of November-May. During the programme children are encouraged to take part in various discussions and introduced to the world of internet. Quizzes and Story Telling are also good ingredients to make this programme a very popular one with these children. Children are encouraged to attend with their parents or guardians.
A monthly three hour educational programme between Jan-May aimed for parents of those attending the above named programmes. During it various topics related with the importance of reading are discussed together with an introduction of the services offered by the library.
Orientation visits by students and persons from other entities are organised throughout the year upon an appointment made by phoning directly to the Customer Care Unit.
| A newsletter, Frak tad-Deheb, is published quarterly during the current year by the same unit. Latest acquistions at the Central Public Library are given a prominent space together with interesting information about the library world . |

During the year 2000, Lm14,000 were spent on the purchase of new books and audio-visual material 5,035 new books were bought and there were 10,986 book donations for the Regional and Branch Libraries and 975 books for the Central Public Library.
The Central Public Library, Regional and Branch Libraries altogether issued out on loan 745,442 books, an increase of 12,407 over last year.

During 2000 the Section continued with its task to computerise the holding of the Branch and Regional Libraries. Agreements with Local Councils were endorsed. In all eighteen (18) Agreements were signed. Fifteen (15) libraries have already gone live on the system while fourteen (14) other libraries have all the hardware installed and awaiting to go live once the data input is ready and training is delivered accordingly. The remaining twenty-eight (28) libraries have neither hardware installed nor librarians trained on the system. These libraries will be computerised by 2003 to complete the whole network that would then lead us to the Web Site including a comprehensive catalogue.

About 230 new videos were passed on to the section from the National Library. Other material was purchased to enrich the section such as CD Roms containing runs of popular periodicals and other information of the general demand type. The use of the Internet has increased in the section; circa 12 users per day and the number of users making use of the other facilities viz. Videos, audio-tapes and CDs is augmenting every day. Steps are being taken to purchase additional hardware to accommodate more users.

At present the Section has a total of 24,020 recorded cassettes at its disposal and managed to loan 29,277 tape cassettes. During this period about 2,576 new recorded tapes were acquired for the collection and this has helped the Section to register a record in loans. Much effort has been put in to promote the services of the Section and much appreciation for services rendered has been received in return from its members (totalling now to 900) through their letters.

Four courses consisting of Circulation and three courses on E-Mail version 5.3 were delivered. Members of staff benefitted from these courses which were supplemented with hand-outs and practical sessions. Patch 15 was tested and installed to enhance the Library Information System. User Group meetings in connection with the use of the Library Information System were held regularly every 3 months and updates were implemented. Continual maintenance of hardware at the Central Public Library and Branch sites was maintained to ensure efficiency in the delivery of service.
