Mr Joseph Magro

Mr Joseph Magro B.Sc. Eng. (Hons.) is the Director for the Department of Planning and Development within the Education Division. Mr J. Magro has been giving a widespread contribution in the educational field for the past 33 years.

Mr J. Magro received his education at the Qrendi Primary School, St Joseph Secondary Technical School, Paola, and the College of Education. He read Engineering at the Royal University of Malta from where he graduated in 1971.

He taught mathematics at the Sir Temi Zammit Secondary Technical School, Naxxar, at the Junior Lyceum, Handaq and at the :ian Fran;isk Upper Lyceum, Msida where he was also appointed as Guidance Teacher. 

As a Guidance Teacher, Mr Magro took an active part in the:-

  • Publication of the Careers Information Literature;

  • Talks for parents and students about Careers;

  • Organisation of Annual Careers Convention;

  • Annual publication of Prospectus of Post-Secondary School Courses;

  • Publication of Tracer Study amongst school leavers and Sixth Formers.

In 1992 Mr Magro was appointed as Education Assistant for Mathematics were he was actively involved in the introduction of new syllabi for this subject and in the organization of in-service courses for Mathematics teachers.

In 1996, Mr Magro was appointed as I.T. Project Manager within the Education Division. He immediately embarked on the setting up of a stable networking system to ease the creation of the information highway. Within a short period, together with a team of professional personnel he oversaw the computerization of all year 1 State Primary schools in Malta and Gozo. Today we are taking advantage of the most modern equipment to make an enormous leap that is bringing us closer to the most advanced countries. 

In the past years, Mr Magro attended several courses, Seminar and Conferences in Malta and abroad (U.K., Ireland, Italy. Sweden, Portugal, Germany, Belgium) on various topics related to his work. During these conferences he started contacts with other professionals abroad. 

Besides, the post of Director, Mr Joseph Magro also holds a number of key positions in various institutional bodies. 

  • Vice-Chairman and Director of the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools;
  • Director of the Employment and Training Corporation;

  • Council Member of the University of Malta appointed by the Prime Minister;

  • Member on the Board of the Institute of Linguistics;

  • Member on the Matsec Board; 

  • Member on the Gozo Council for Education;

  • National Co-ordinator of 'Eurydice';

  • Ministerial Representative on the Red Cross Committee (Malta).

  • Minister's Representative on the Inter-Ministerial Steering Group.

As Director of the Planning and Development Department, Mr J. Magro aims to focus his energy on the creation of sounder state schools in order to make them more functional for the needs of our future generations in light of the National Curriculum.
