Adolescent Pregnancy & Education

ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Stephanie Borg

Adolescence is a time when dramatic physical and psychological changes occur, and pregnancy during this period causes a disruption in the adolescent's life, including her schooling. This study has attempted to explore the adolescent pregnancy phenomenon and its relation to educational attainment within the local context though the use of semi-structured interviews. The research aim was to identify whether these adolescents want to further their education in spite of their pregnancy, the limitations they experience in trying to achieve this goal and whether there are sufficient opportunities for them to do so. Teenage pregnancy is not a new phenomenon, nor is it uncommon. The importance of education for teenage mothers is highlighted and emphasized within this research project and from the research findings, it is clear that a substantial number of these adolescents, particularly those without adequate support from the family and schools, would welcome the opportunity of furthering their education. The project concludes with a summary of the main findings and makes recommendations for further research, policy and service development.
