ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Aquilina Léonine
Eight-year old girls are at a stage when their dolls are increasingly adding the value of looks in their play, as well as in their self-image. Their dolls are not merely playthings but proximate role models that prepare the girls for the female body image portrayals in the media and contemporary western beauty ideals. The Barbie doll is the prime example of such dolls.
Research has shown that the media has had negative repercussions on children. Concerns have arisen in western societies whether the Barbie doll with her too ideal physique and perfect looks might have a harming effect on young girls' self-image and self-appreciation.
This dissertation sets out to introduce the reader to Barbie, learn who she is, and understand how and why she was created. This leads on to discover whether young girls are actually influenced by the Barbie doll's unattainable body image. A qualitative study was carried out using four focus group interviews to assess any effect of the Barbie doll body image on Maltese girls, and how in turn these girls perceive the doll.
