Physical Education: A Base for An Inclusive Curriculum

ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Bartolo Joseph & Sultana Maureen

This research analyses the importance of Physical Education in the light of inclusion and the role it is playing and can play. It is mainly concerned with students with impairments. Interviews with Heads of schools, class and peripatetic physical education teachers will open a window on the current practices in our schools concerning the planning and implementation of the physical education programme. Moreover, this study is concerned with the effects that physical education has on students with impairments. The study will look at the attitudes and feelings of those who are responsible for carrying out the physical education programme in our schools. The authors' findings suggest that although both class and peripatetic PE teachers view physical education as an important tool in the education of students with impairments, it seems that neither of them feel competent in the area. Thus, due to the way the physical education programme is being carried out, all students, but especially students with impairments are not getting out of it as much as they should. The concluding chapter (rationale) suggests some ways, how the planning and implementation of the physical education programme for students with impairments could be improved in order to help them reach their optimum development.
