Physical Education, Health And Leisure Performance Coursework And Project Work For Secondary Schools
ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Rachael Anthea Sammut

As the cognitive aspect of learning and authentic assessments become more important in physical education, so do well designed coursework and project work. Coursework projects in physical education classes locally have existed for quite some time, and now a form of project work has also appeared as part of the SEC PE syllabus; where the students must complete three different tasks. This investigation employs two survey methods; questionnaire and interview, to explore the issues from two angles; the students and the teachers, respectively. The study examines the current practices were performance coursework and project work are concerned. Although the focus is hence on the type of coursework and projects that are assigned, it also looks into the way such efforts are assessed and the accreditation that is given for projects that students may be involved in at extracurricular levels. The study hence, goes beyond the bounds of current statistical research to reveal a more detailed picture of the coursework projects assigned in local secondary schools. The findings highlight the influences of the SEC PE tasks on the physical education coursework projects which are assigned. The results also illuminate current practices by distinguishing the methods of assessment used for such work and also the actual weighting that they are allocated in the final report cards.
