Being an Adolescent Unmarried Mother: Possible Influences on Issues of Identity
ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Moyra Azzopardi

In adolescence, development is a multi-faceted event involving every aspect of an individual, where identity formation is the hallmark. During this period, sexuality becomes a dominant feature and makes adolescents prone to risky behaviour which can lead to early pregnancy. Pregnancy in adolescence brings a cascade of events that can negatively affect the main social contexts in the adolescents’ journey resulting in serious limitations to life’s opportunities. Thus, female adolescents committed to deal with the realities of being a mother may be hindered from the normal strivings for identity, wherein they explore different adult roles. This study endeavoured to achieve an insight on the impact of pregnancy on the life of unmarried adolescents in the local context through qualitative and quantitative techniques. The research aims to underline the aspects of identity formation which are affected by adolescent pregnancy, assess the needs encountered and propose suggestions. This study indicates that pregnancy can be a stressful event that changes an adolescent’s life completely. Important aspects like financial dependence, negative self-image, sudden responsibilities and changes in aspirations are highlighted. Practical and emotional support were identified as critical for the young mothers’ well being; without adequate help they are likely to flounder. The study concludes with a discussion, presents suggestions on how pregnancy in adolescence might be prevented and recommends ways how adolescent mothers can be helped so as to permit them to achieve their full range of potential.
