Experiment in the Home Economics Curriculum

ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Maria Antonia Farrugia

A sample of nineteen Home Econonmics teachers teaching Form 3 and Form 4 in a range of Secondary Schools were interviewed to investigate the extent to which they included science based activities to explain scientific principles set down in the Home Economics Curriculum. Following the interview, a resource pack of experiments that teachers could use as part of their teaching strategies was developed that addressed their needs and constraints. The pack is divided into two main sections "food, Health and Nutrition", and ": Choice and Management of Resources". Experiments included in each section contain precise instructions and worksheets for pupils together with scientific explanation for the teachers. An evaluation of the resource pack was carried out by nine Home Economics teachers, some of whom were familiar with the experiments and others who had limited scientific knowledge. The feedback given was generally positive as teachers found the resource pack to be a valuable teaching tool that enables pupils to acquire scientific knowledge applicable to everyday situations.
