An assessment of the role of the Health and Safety Teacher
ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Schembri Omar

This long essay assesses the role of the Health and Safety teacher in Maltese state schools. This post is intended to secure well-being, generate health and safety awareness amongst pupils and conformity with health and safety legislation. The Health and Safety teachers’ organisational setup in the Education Division will be looked into, while an overview of the responsibilities to be enacted in local state schools will be examined. Prevalent factors related to Health and Safety issues at school will be analysed.

The study will rely almost entirely on literature investigation and empirical information forwarded through questionnaires and two interviews. The last chapter of this long essay draws out conclusions and suggests recommendations to improve and heighten the importance of health and safety principles for students. Ultimately, this study will set out to investigate the role of the Health and Safety teacher and the current mechanisms for its implementation. Since the post of the Health and Safety teacher is a recent occurrence and it is still evolving, this work depicts current practices and suggests ways for the future efficacy of this role.
