ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Bellia Joanna & Azzopardi Jeannette
I.T. has become a vital resource in all sectors
of the economy such as accounting, retailing, tourism
and also in education. I.T. resources have become
indispensable to overcome challenges present in
today’s classroom environment such as awareness
of students’ different intelligences, mixed
ability groups and the need to prepare students
for a rapidly changing world of work. This long
essay sets out to establish that I.T. resources
can be used to facilitate the Business Studies
subject teaching and learning process.
Teachers’ attitudes and opinions towards
I.T. and their readiness to use it, were acquired
through questionnaires. From analysis made it
is clear that there is a general optimism towards
the use of I.T. in the Business Studies subject.
However, many respondents claimed that their
schools are not provided with adequate I.T. resources
and facilities that are needed in order to implement
I.T. across the curriculum.
Various recommendations have been presented
in this long essay. Implementing these suggestions
is vital in order to enhance the use of I.T.
resources in teaching Business Studies. Emphasis
should be made on teachers’ training and
motivation, on additional investment in recent
I.T. resources, as well as on collaboration between
educational stakeholders. In addition to these
suggestions, a resource pack has be drawn up
in order to provide teachers with ready-made
I.T. resources, as well as to present them examples
of how I.T. can be used in delivering Business
Studies lessons. This resource pack empowers
students, as it is an attempt to move away from
a teacher-centred pedagogy to a student-oriented
one. Rather than believing that students are
passive recipients of knowledge, they are considered
as “critical and creative thinkers and
producers of knowledge” (Ministry of Education
2000: 509).
