Maltese pre-school teachers' past and present play experiences
ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Borg Suzanne

Play is a central element in a child’s life. Through play children learn and develop by exploring manipulating and conquering difficulties. All these aspects teach children how to face difficulties that arise in the immediate as well as the prospective future. In Malta hardly any research has been carried out on play, although the importance of this phenomenon has been recognized through various research.

The aim of this study was to analyse, describe and explore what pre-school teachers in Malta thought of play. A qualitative method was used following a phenomenological approach. This study set out to find out how pre-school teachers remember their play and how they view children’s play today. The study consisted of interviewing nine pre-school teachers, which were selected as having as much variance as possible between each other.
