Literacy is a very important aspect in today’s world and yet not everyone in our society is capable of reading and writing. Students with learning difficulties, in fact find it harder to acquire the skills needed to be a competent literate person in our society. More specifically students with learning difficulties find it hard to practice creative writing. This is mainly because they find it hard to express themselves and to present their ideas in the written genre. They tend to make many spelling mistakes and this discourages them further.

This thesis focuses on the plight of these students. It recommends putting the writing process into action in the classroom as a way of teaching creative writing. The writing process allows the use of different teaching strategies as a way of motivating learning; it promotes cooperative learning; and it gives the students the opportunity to choose what they want to write about. Once students start enjoying creative writing they become intrinsically motivated and their writing skills improve accordingly. The publication of students’ writing presented at the end of this thesis testifies to this.
