Social Studies: A Dying Subject? A case study within a boys’ secondary school in Malta
ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Delmar Charlene

This study is a Sociological enquiry investigating the teaching and learning of Social Studies within a specific Boys’ Secondary School in Malta. Stirred by a belief in ‘Powerful Social Studies’, it investigates the prevalent beliefs and attitudes of different stakeholders towards the subject. It is strongly argues that in the present multi-cultural, global, socially changing society, ‘Social Studies’ is relevant today more than ever. Above all, no other subject has the competence of instilling the ‘Sociological Imagination’ in our students. For these and many other reasons, we cannot afford Social Studies teaching and learning to decline in quality or fizzle out in other subject areas…. and hence to ‘die’.
