The challenging role of the Head: As viewed by woman Head Teachers in Maltese Primary Government Schools

This is a grounded in-depth study of various aspects of the challenges faced by female primary head teachers in Malta. The qualitative study aimed for an extensive review of the literature on the role of woman in educational management, particularly supporting different feminist theories in the field.

Most of the data was collected from a comparative analysis interviews carried out with several female school heads, giving importance to their concerns and experiences, career development, challenges and problem solving. The study also highlights the positive contributions made by woman in headship positions in general as well as the specific circumstances of certain schools. Limitations, constraints, discrimination, social demands and balancing family commitments on female heads were also highlighted.
