Creating history materials for students with Down Syndrome in Form I
ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Grech Louisa

In creating history materials for students with Down syndrome in Form I, it is imperative that we have some knowledge of what Down syndrome is and the affects that it has on the person. It is also important to be aware of the difficulties that children with Down syndrome might have in their development and consequently how this influences their learning.

Children with Down syndrome have a specific learning profile. This can help us to understand the strategies that we can adopt to make their learning meaningful and effective. History can lend itself well, by means of the various ways in which it can be taught, to take on board the differentiation that will help students with Down syndrome to better understand the subject.

In this long essay I will try to give adequate guidelines to support this differentiation by providing materials that can be used to understand certain concepts as well as to acquire information in an effective way. Naturally, the teacher and the facilitator of the student with Down syndrome have to assess the level at which the student is and modify the material accordingly, to suit the needs of that particular student. However, I hope that the materials produced here will help to stimulate creativity and provide one with some basic resources and ideas that can be taken on board and perhaps used not only to provide effective learning for the student with Down syndrome but might also be helpful material that can be used with other students facing similar learning difficulties.
