AREA SECONDARY SCHOOL LEAVERS AND THE WORLD OF WORK
ABSTRACT of Thesis by
Mallia Louis

This dissertation has focused on those students in Area Secondary Schools who very often complete their secondary education without obtaining any qualifications. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the reasons why many Area Secondary School leavers tend to settle for jobs which need minimal skills and competencies.

Employing both quantitative and qualitative techniques, I have attempted to determine common features in the students’ attitude towards their education as well as their aspirations and expectations regarding the world of work.

The implications of this study show that various factors negatively influence the kind of education which Area Secondary School students receive. Consequently this leads to school leavers from this educational sector facing significant problems in finding employment.
