Over thirty years ago, schooling was given in three separate locations, namely in a part leased from the Friars College in St. Anthony Street, in a house in Hamri Street as well as in a large building known as the old school in the same street, now occupied by foreign residents. The present school was inaugurated in September 1965 and is visible by all visitors to Gozo proceeding up the road from Mgarr Harbour. The present school was built on a wide open area and in subsequent years, parts of it were taken over by the then Posts Department, now Maltapost, the Art School and the Works Department. It still boasts a large yard and garden and is in the process of enclosing its staircases for better security and safety considerations. Recently a remote operated iron gate was installed from funds raised by the School Council.
MISSION STATEMENT
We seek to help our pupils, staff and parents respect themselves and others especially through a disciplined behaviour and approach to learning.
On the 27th January 2000 the Ghajnsielem Primary School was named after Anton Cassar, the first headteacher the new school had.
Great efforts are expanded in extra curricular activities such as the Christmas Concert, Sports, Carnival, Talents' Day and in the Prize Giving Ceremony. Another activity embarked upon is that dealing with the twinning with another school. Through this activity, pupils from another school are invited to Ghajnsielem Primary School to share in a programme of activities. A similar programme is then held in a reciprocal village and this fosters new acquaintances, friendship and helps in the broadening of mentalities. At present the school welcomes over two hundred and thirty pupils, has a head teacher, eight teachers, three instructors and ten Kindergarten Assistants.
