At present the school population is four hundred ninety two. Of these one hundred forty three attend Kindergarten classes and three hundred forty nine attend Primary classes with an age range between three and eleven. The school caters for children from the following boundaries: The Village Core, Mellieha Heights, Ta’ l-Ibraggíí, Ta’ Masrija, Santa Marija Estate, Selmun, Ta’ Pennellu and Qasam Barrani. The school has always had an excellent academic record. The pass rates both in Junior Lyceum and Common Entrance Exams show this. However, the school offers a holistic, broad education which goes beyond academic subjects. Inter-School Sports Meeting, Drama Activities, Art Exhibitions, Religious Activities, Educational Outings and others are ample proof of this.

School Facade
School Grounds

Mellieha Primary School has always had good relations with the Local Councils since their formation in 1994. As a result of these contacts, Mellieha is not just a Primary School but also a Community School. In fact the following courses are all held after school hours at Mellieha Primary: Lace-Making, Art, Flower-Arranging, Dancing, Drama, Sewing, German Language lessons and Maltese for foreigners. The School premises are also used by other Associations such as the Mellieha Athletic Team, the Mellieha Sports Club, the Band Clubs and by a local Theatre Company. People of various age groups attend these courses or participate in the various activities.

On the 20th May 1998 the name ‘Skola Marija Bambina’, chosen by the School Council was approved by the Education Authorities. The name gives the school its identity - an identity that is historically, culturally and religiously linked with the village of Mellieha. Mary was Jesus’s first educator. Under her care “Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature and in favour with God and with people” (Luke.Ch.2 pg.52). This, along with the School’s Mission Statement is definitely in line with the newly adopted Motto: ‘Challenge, Growth and Understanding’.

MISSION STATEMENT

‘Marija Bambina’ is a 3 - 11 Co-educational Primary School. We aim to be a happy, well-run school to which children come eagerly and with a sense of belonging, knowing that there is much that will challenge and stretch them, and confident that to do so is enjoyable; where they are treated as equals and are therefore expected to treat each other as equals; and where there are high expectations of them in all that they do.

COMMUNICATION AND SECURITY SYSTEMS FOR THE SCHOOL

The main project in this year's School Development Plan is called 'Communication and Security Systems for the School'.

This project aims to:

i. further promote Social Relations and help improve Home-School links and School-Local Community links;

ii. identify the needs of the school so as to create an effective and efficient Communication System which is expandable to all classes and other areas and which is ADSL compatible - thus allowing easy access to Internet on class computers and providing a Multisite Network System for Inter-School Communication;

iii. set up a CCTV Security and Observation System in order to monitor school visitors using Main and Kinder entrances from Administration Block.
