The first secondary school at Zurrieq was opened in 1970, when Secondary Education became compulsory for one and all.  Actually it was a Secondary School for Girls and it remained so for ten years. During this period there were four different Heads of school, Ms. M. Bugeja, M. Formosa, M.C. Consiglio and Ms. C. Sammut.

Classroom

In September 1980, the school changed over to a Boys' Institution. The first Head of school was Mr. C. Bugeja.  Students came from the catchments areas of Luqa, Qrendi, Mqabba, Safi, Kirkop and of course from Zurrieq.

In September of 1981, a new Head took over, Dr. G.V. Ellul and he remained there for three years.  So did Mr. R. J. Burgess who was Head of school from November 1984 up to October 1987.  Mr. R.V. Meachen succeeded Mr. Burgess in November 1987.  Mr. J.P. Camilleri followed him for just a short spell.

School grounds

There was a time when the school population was at its lowest ebb and this was mainly due to the creation of the Pre-Secondary Schools.  A substantial number of students from the mentioned areas were opting for the new schools.  To boost new blood, students from B'Bugia, Ghaxaq, Gudja and Marsaxlokk were added to the list.  Thus in 1988, there were 225 students attending Zurrieq Boys' Secondary school.

In 1990 Dr. Joseph Bartolo took over as Head of school.  A year later he moved to a bigger school in Zebbug and Mr. Anthony Spiteri succeeded him at Zurrieq.  In September1995, Mr.Frans Sammut was appointed Head.  A year later Mr. Marcel Scicluna became the new Head teacher but like his predecessor he remained at Zurrieq for just another year.  In 1997 Mr. Godfrey Bonello took over the school for yet another short stay.  Mr. Tony Demicoli, whose term of office was the shortest in school's history the summer months of 1998 and the first term of the scholastic year 98-99, followed him.

Project Exibition

On the 6th of January 1999 the present Head of school, Mr. Charles Cassar took over at Zurrieq.  He promised stability at the helm and continuity in administration. The Asst. Head, Mr. Frans Calleja, ably assists him.

Today, the school's population is 250 students. They come from Zurrieq, Qrendi, Mqabba, Safi, Kirkop and B'Bugia, which are the catchments areas at the moment.

Prize Day

The School bears the name of Mons. Pietru Pawl Saydon, a humble priest, a great scholar, famous for his prolific knowledge of Maltese and the Bible. He was born, lived and died at Zurrieq.

The motto of "Mons. P.P. Saydon preaches that "the school is a caring establishment which recognizes the worth of every individual".  The School Development Plan focuses around this creed.
