Zebbug, with a population of about 1000, is built on a south-west to north-east ridge on the northern side of the Island of Gozo.

The first state school in the village was opened in 1871 and was housed in two large houses in Dun F. Vella Street. The present modern school, the plans for which were drawn by Architect Joseph Huntingford A.&C.E., was officially opened by Education Minister Ms. Agatha Barbara on April 6th 1958. It was named after Mons. Giovanni Andrea Vella D.D., J.C.D., a Zebbug born and bred scholar, on June 15th, 2001.

The School's mission statement is

v To enhance the name of the school with all those concerned in the field of education.

v To maintain on-going development as an academic institution that strives for excellence in every sphere.

v To be a school in which each person is encouraged to feel at home, be creative, confident and caring and to develop his/her potential to the full.

v To be a school which, together with the community, prepares our young pupils to face challenges positively and to lay the basis for a mature and responsible contribution in adult life.

The school buildings consist of three wings with an open verandah all along them. In the middle is a large ground and on the west and south sides are two plots with olive, palm and other decorative trees. The main block (east wing) houses the Headteacher's office, a staff-room, and a number of classrooms. Where it joins the south wing are the school hall and adjacent rooms. In one of the rooms in the south wing we have a pretty little museum - a classroom with 1920s furniture and other relics one used to find in schools up to the l960s. Ours is the only school in Gozo that has a mini gymnasium. Two very valuable assets the school enjoys are the peace and quiet that reigns around it, and the magnificent country and sea views one can enjoy from it. On very fine days Sicily and even Mount Etna can be seen on the northern horizon.

The school population amounts to just over 100 divided into 6 primary and 2 kindergarten classes. Our football and netball teams take part in inter-school competitions and every year we field a good team for the Gozo Sports Rally and an impressive troupe of dancers in the Gozo Children's Carnival. Other activities include drama, music, and cultural and educational visits. Every year our school holds four monetary collections to help both local and foreign charity institutions.

One of the main aims of our school is to make schooling a pleasant educational experience in which all feel they are highly appreciated. Together, we, the school staff, the School Council and the community feel we are achieving this aim.
