Engagement of Supply Teachers in the
Education Department

1. The Director General (Education) notifies that the Education Department is in the process of compiling a reserve list of prospective Supply Teachers to teach in Malta and/or Gozo for a definite period on casual or part-time basis as and when required.

2. Applications are invited from candidates who are willing to teach at the following levels:

(i) Primary Education Level.
(ii) Secondary Education Level

Applicants preferring to teach at Secondary or Post Secondary Level are to state which subjects they are qualified to teach.

3. Any offer of engagement is of an entirely temporary nature and may be terminated at the discretion of the Director General (Education), when such services are, for any reason, no longer required.

4. Selected candidates may be transferred from one school to another.

5. Candidates must:

(i) be citizens of Malta (a birth certificate is to be produced);
(ii) be eighteen years or over at the time of the application;
(iii) be of good moral character (a recent Police certificate of conduct is to be produced).

Married women are to produce their marriage certificate.

6. Applications are invited from candidates:

(i) who are in possession of a permanent warrant, or
(ii) who are in possession of a First Degree, or
(iii) who are qualified in not less than 2 subjects at Advanced Matriculation Level (or equivalent qualifications) ,and passes at Ordinary Level Malta Matriculation or Secondary Education Certificate or equivalent in English Language, Maltese and Mathematics.

7. Qualifications and experience claimed must be supported by certificates and/or testimonials (photocopies are to be included with the application; originals to be produced for verification at the interview).

8. Eligible applicants will be interviewed by a Selection Board if and when the need arises in order to assess their suitability for the position. Original certificates and/or testimonials relating to their qualifications are to be produced by the candidate during the interview.

9. Selected applicants will be medically examined to as-certain that they are fit for the post.

10. Supply teachers in possession of a permanent warrant will be paid a pro rata hourly rata according to the minimum of salary scale 9; supply teachers in possession of a first degree as per para. 6 (ii) will be paid pro rata according to the minimum of salary scale 10, and supply teachers in possession of qualifications as per para. 6 (iii) will be paid pro rata according to the minimum of salary scale 12.

11. The leave entitlement of Supply teachers shall be as specified in Legal Notice 61196.

12. Candidates who are bound by an agreement of apprenticeship shall not be considered for engagement, unless they produce the written consent of their employer and of the Employment and Training Corporation.

13. Applications will also be accepted from suitably qualified foreign citizens residing in Malta, provided that a foreign citizen will only be offered employment if there are not enough successful candidates of Maltese nationality to fill existing vacancy/vacancies.

The rate payable to a foreign Supply Teacher will correspond to the rate payable to a Supply Teacher of Maltese nationality.

14. (i) Applications will be received by the Director General (Education) - (att. Mr Noel Camileri- Room 339, for Primary Level, Ms Rachel Tanti Room 335 for Secondary Level.

(ii) Applications from Gozo may submit their applications at the Office of the Assistant Director of Education, Education Office Victoria, Gozo.

(iii) Applications should be forwarded by Registered Post or preferably handed in personally.

(iv) In addition to an application in the applicant's own handwriting, a summary of qualifications, experience and other relevant information, should be tabulated on a special form obtainable on request from the above addresses.

(v) Applications delivered by hand will be acknowledged in writing by the Director General (Education) and a receipt given at the time of delivery.

(vi) Applications by post should be sent by registered mail. The applications will be acknowledged in writing by the Director General (Education) within seven days.
