Mission Statement

The Institute of Tourism Studies aims to provide tertiary, higher and vocational education in the field of Tourism. It seeks to identify and monitor customer needs and satisfaction and is responsible for providing the Hospitality Industry with personnel trained to international standards.

Q.
What is the Institute of Tourism Studies?
 
A.

The Institute of Tourism Studies is a higher and tertiary level institution aimed at meeting the changing needs of the Hospitality and Tourism Industry. The Institute was established in 1987 and consolidated by the Education Act No. XIII of 2006 of the Laws of Malta.

The main responsibility of the Institute is to furnish the Tourism Sector with professional personnel who can guarantee an excellent standard of products and services within the Hospitality Industry.

What type of courses are offered at ITS?

Full time Courses are offered at 3 different levels:

Foundation:
Food Preparation & Service; Restaurant Operations

Certificate:
Hotel Operations, Accommodation Operations, Travel Agency Operations, Food & Beverage Service and Supervisory Studies, Food Preparation & Production and Supervisory Studies, Craft Certificate in Food & Beverage Service, Craft Certificate in Food Preparation & Production, Craft Certificate in Restaurant Operations

Diploma:
Hotel Operations, Accommodation Operations, Food & Beverage Service, Culinary Arts, Travel Agency Operations, Tour Guiding

Higher Diploma:
Hospitality and Tourism Management

What is the language of tuition at the Institute?
 
A.
The language of tuition is English for ITS Courses. English and Maltese are the languages of tuition for the ESTS (Hospitality Trades) Courses.

When are the closing dates of applications?
 
A.

Application forms duly filled in are to be presented as follows:

Foundation and ESTS Programmes – June

What are the academic qualifications for these courses?
 
A.
”A“ levels are required for Hospitality & Tourism Management, while "O" levels are required for all courses, but these vary according to the programme of study. All prospective students must satisfy the entry criteria for their chosen programme.

What is the duration of the courses offered by ITS?
 
A.

The duration varies from one year Foundation Level Certificate to a four-year Diploma programme.

 
Q.
Is there an age limit for admission to the ITS?
 
A.
The minimum age for admission to the Foundation Level course is 16 years whilst that for the higher courses is 17 years.
 
Q.
Is it true that I have to undergo industrial training abroad?
 
A.
Yes. All students who opt to proceed to the Diploma Programme must undergo a twelve-month International Internship.
 
Q.
Can mature students apply for ITS courses?
 
A.
Yes. The Institute considers applications from mature students who are 23 years of age or over.
 
Q.
Do I get a stipend whilst attending ITS?
 
A.
Yes. Stipends are paid to eligible students at the rate of Lm12 (EUR27.95)per week for the first year, Lm17 (EUR39.60)per week for the second year and Lm22 (EUR51.25)per week for their final year. Failure to attend sessions will result in deductions from the stipend. Mature students do not get a stipend.

Do I have to pay National Security contributions?
 
A.
Your share of the National Security contributions will be deducted from your weekly stipend.

Am I entitled to the Government bonus?
 
A.
Yes. You are entitled to half the annual Government bonus which is paid twice yearly.

Are foreign students eligible to apply for ITS courses?
 
A.

The Institute of Tourism Studies strongly believes in the importance of a multicultural educational setting. It gladly welcomes students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds to follow vocational courses in the Hospitality and Catering sector at diverse levels, same as the ones offered to Maltese students.

What major facilities are available at ITS?
 
A.

Main desk at ITS:

The aim of the main reception at the Institute of Tourism Studies is to provide general assistance. Individual requests are then directed to the appropriate department / person.

All correspondence received is collected, registered and delivered to the respective lecturer/member of staff. The main reception desk is also responsible for bookings for lunch / dinner at the Pembroke Suite, on
Tel. No:23793100.

Training Kitchens & Restaurants:

The Institute operates two restaurants and two table and counter service outlets each equipped with their adjacent kitchens for training purposes.

The Pembroke Suite is a silver service restaurant overlooking St. George's Bay. The aim of this restaurant it to provide students with an opportunity to work realistically under supervision whilst practicing their Food Preparation and Beverage Operation skills. All the food preparation and service is done by the students themselves, overseen by their tutors.

The same restaurant also supports The St. George's Suite, which is used for workshops and seminars. The Pembroke Suite incorporates a fully stocked bar.

Meals are reasonably priced. Male guests are requested to wear a jacket and tie and children under twelve are not allowed. The prices reflect the use of the facility for training purposes.

The Pembroke Suite is open from Monday - Friday for lunch from 1230 hours - 1400 hours and on Thursday and Friday evenings for dinner from 1930 hours - 2230 hours. Patrons are kindly requested to make their reservations in advance, to avoid disappointment, by telephone only on 23793 333 between 0800 hours and 1600 hours.

The Vaults is a training restaurant serviced by first-year students. A three-course lunch is served every day. Members of the public are able to use this facility.

Preparation Kitchens: One of these kitchens is the The New individual kitchen (NIK) which is "a state-of-the-art" eighteen-station laboratory built in 1996 to cater for large groups of students. This facility is also used for Culinary Competitions and for demonstrations by visiting chefs.

Housekeeping Lab: At ITS each theoretical topic is followed by a practical session. Students, who never worked in hotels, will be given the opportunity to use the housekeeping lab, to visually see the equipment, and to use the actual equipment under the supervision of their tutor.

IT Facilities: The Institute of Tourism Studies has two computer labs, one in the main campus at St. Julians and the other in the secondary campus located in Pembroke.

The ITS eLearning site, ITSELNET, is being developed as part of the MEDFORIST Project funded by the European Commission under the EUMEDIS Initiative. The objective of the Project is to build a Mediterranean Network of teachers in the field of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) applied to trade and industry. Through this site the Institute of Tourism Studies provides on-line learning opportunities for its students, and will eventually include opportunities for on-line workers for external students.

Library/Resource Centre: The Library at the Institute of Tourism Studies offers a wide range of books on all the subjects taught at the Institute. All registered full-time students receiving a stipend will be issued with a Library Membership Card which can be collected from the Librarian's Office. All other students who do not receive a stipend require a permit to borrow books from the Library. Permits are only valid after a refundable deposit of LM20 is paid at the Accounts Department. Non-members students can also make use of all the services of the Library but are not entitled to borrow material outside the Library.

The primary aim of the Resource Centre is to provide computer access to the students. The room consists of 12 computer stations all equipped with the latest technology to facilitate the students throughout the course of their studies. Students also have the opportunity to surf the web in order to conduct educational research and print a limited amount of pages daily. At the Resource Centre one may also find visual, audio and audio-visual educational resources.

Guidance & Counselling: The Guidance and Counselling Unit at the Institute of Tourism Studies provides a professional, confidential service in both personal counselling, and career / vocational guidance. The philosophy of the service is the overall well-being of the student attending the Institute of Tourism Studies. All students attending the ITS can access the service for any situation concerning their welfare.

International Internships: The International Internship is a 12 month practical experience in the hospitality industry which ITS students undertake in a foreign country. Moreover, it is a module within the ITS Programme of Studies which carries six (6) academic credits. It is a compulsory module for students following the Diploma Course in Hospitality Management as well as for those students pursuing other courses such as Hotel Operations, etc., who intend to proceed with their studies up to Diploma level. ESTS students and Day Release students may also choose to take on this Internship solely for more work experience overseas.

Office of The Registrar: The Office of the Registrar offers a friendly, professional and impartial information advice and guidance service on education and careers opportunities. The aim of this service is to make our tuition readily available to individuals of any age or background who are inclined to follow any of the various Programmes of Study offered by the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS).
